Potentially Millions lost As BAYC IG account is hacked and scammers make off with a wealth of NFTs and other valuable collectibles!
According to the @boredapeyachtclub their Instagram was compromised this Monday (4/25) morning (it has since been recovered). The hackers posted a link to a fake minting website, resulting in the loss of 4 apes, 6 mutants, 3 kennels and potentially other highly valuable NFTs, this according to BAYC founder Gargamel. The total value of the lost items is said to range between $1,000,000 and $13,000,000 according to different sources! Gargamel has also issued a public statement indicating that 2FA and all other recommended Instagram security measures were actively in place at the time of the hack.
As of now it remains to be seen what measures, if any, will be taken to restore the lost property of those unfortunate enough to have fallen victim to this hack. But this rather unsophisticated compromise highlights the issues that currently exist in the world of NFTs. An environment where millions of dollars worth PFPs, music & tokens are up for grabs, and the means to acquire them often hinge on little more than being able to trick unsuspecting victims into linking a wallet to a fake website and FOMO.
